Please do your bit to curb the illegal scrap metal trade

Cashless Scrap Metal Trade - Amendment to Scrap Metal Merchants Act 1964

Responsible department: Home Office

Due to a significant rise in value, metal has become a much sought after commodity. This increased demand has resulted in a sharp rise in metal theft nationally. Metal fencing, gates, manhole covers and other metallic items are stolen on a regular basis. Property is raided for lead, copper and cabling. War memorials and statues have been taken. Overhead power lines are stolen at serious risk to personal safety with huge costs for replacement and major inconvenience to the public. Historically the scrap metal trade has been a cash in hand industry. This creates difficulties as there is no audit trail, making identification of individuals who may be trading stolen metal or who may be committing tax or benefits fraud, a difficult proposition. An amendment to the Scrap Metal Merchants Act 1964 to prohibit cash transactions would make payment by cheque or directly into a bank account mandatory and would be a significant component in reducing metal theft.

New members flock to join Labour Party

We learn that 15,000 joined Labour online, extra 3,000 joined off line. That's 18,000 new members in last 14 days - Remarkable.

Thus sends us a message from the people that we hold the respect of an increasing number of the electorate. Let us build on this support .

Ann Wilson just fails to be elected

A note to thank all those who supported me in the local elections last week. Unfortunately my share of the vote was 70 short to win... if you wish to add any comments please do so below... I shall continue to raise issues about the failures of the Tory run Council

Thanks again

Best wishes

Ann

Education: A good education is the right of everyone. I will give as much support as possible to local schools. I think education starts early in life and Sure Start in Darlaston, a Labour initiative, is an invaluable resource.
Employment: I will do as much as I can to promote new employment opportunities in Walsall. I support agencies like Darlaston Jet which give an excellent service to those unemployed or who need job advice.
Health: The Darlaston Health Centre and the new Walsall Hospital are examples of the Labour Government’s commitment to health and I will work to continue to improve Health services for the area.
Environment: I think everyone has the right to a clean and safe environment. I have found there is worry about litter and dog “poo”. I will work to get more litter bins and to help and encourage dog owners to always clean up after their dogs.
Leisure: open green spaces: I oppose the closure of Leisure Centres and the loss of 52% of George Rose Park.
Anti-social behaviour: I will support residents and the police in their efforts to control anti-social behaviour in the area.
